WV Vet Tech, LLC, a family run business, was founded in 2006 by Walter Howerton, a
service-disabled Vietnam veteran who retired from the United States
Marine Corps in 1988. The sole purpose was to provide affordable
Internet Technology to WV Small Businesses residing in economically
depressed areas. Since then, WV Vet Tech has grown to serve customers throughout
the United States, Europe, and Central America.
Mr. Howerton’s introduction into computer operations was
provided by the United States Army at Fort Sill, Oklahoma in the
1960s with the Field
Artillery Digital Automatic Computer (FADAC.)
He was later introduced to the AN/UYK-7, which was the standard 32-bit system of the United States Navy for
surface ship and submarine platforms. It was also used in the
Navy’s Aegis Combat System. In 1982 he attended the Fleet
Combat Training Center, Pacific at San Diego, California for
Management Information Systems. His primary duty was coding
hand-written Operational Amphibious Landing Plans into digital
documents, accessible aboard amphibious ships. While not
“operational” Mr. Howerton worked with the programming staff at
Point Loma to streamline the MIS process.
Once smaller versions of computers were introduced to the
Marine Corps and private sector he furthered his abilities by
learning the 'Automated Data Processing Equipment for the Fleet Marine Force' (ADPE-FMF),
better known as the “Green
Machine,” which was an IBM Series/1.
After retirement
Mr. Howerton attended Fairmont State College and West Virginia
University focusing on Education and Technology Education.
He has taught Computer Science in public schools and most recently worked on the Air Force Knowledge Now Program
as the Director of Micah Systems.
